Welcome to the Board Stevie ! Looks like we have another Altec fan in the making !![]()
Hi Guys,
Finally got a foot in the Altec door. Got a pair of 605B skeletons waiting for a complete rebuild. To give you an idea of where I am on the knowledge ladder, I have spent last week learning what an inductor does in a crossover, what the capacitor does and I think I know what the resistor does but am not sureI have also learnt how to translate a crossover design into a layout that can be put together thanks to a good link on the Parts Express site. But its a good project to learn about completely new things and wind up with that wonderful effortless, uncompressed Altec sound. Much thanks for forum member Vyju an old time Altec hand here in India who started me off on the Altec trail and to this forum. He is walking me through my build. Also thanks to member Santhoshl whose Altecs I heard. As things stand Vyju and I are gathering parts for a crossover for our respective 605s. Am awaiting a shipping quote from GPA for the recone kits. The cabinet I wanted to build was a vintage looking cabinet from the lansing heritage site but did not find the port details. Also fabricating it here will be an issue with the quality of carpenters available in my city. So decided to do a cabinet that's similar to the Shindo 604 cabinet, based on the 620 diagram. Simple looks, it appeals to me and somehow I love those corner round stands plus it will be considerate to the GF who will not bump into a sharp edge.
Anyways, great to find a bunch of like minded people. Will keep posting pics and info on the build as I keep progressing and of course asking questions to learn from all the wonderful helpful guys hereHopefully will be able to give back in help as time goes by.
Cheerio!

Enjoy the journey Steve.![]()
Thanks for the welcome Altec Best, yes definitely a fan! I come from a single driver background so the duplex 605 seems like a good bet for me. Thanks cradeldorf, this particular journey is proving to be quite a fun one so far. I like to learn something new every year and this year it's learning how speakers are put together.
By the way Altec Best since you're a mod, could you check out an issue? This forum seems to have an issue with the Tapatalk app for iPhone It says forum is restricting access.
Regards
